Twin Sister singer Andrea Estella cast in 'Veronica Mars' movie

She'll appear as a 'messed-up rock princess' after Leighton Meester was unable to take on the role

Twin Sister singer Andrea Estella cast in 'Veronica Mars' movie

Twin Sister singer Andrea Estella has joined the cast of the Veronica Mars movie.

She'll play a character called Carrie Bishop, described by Estella as a "messed-up rock princess". The character previously appeared in two episodes of the Veronica Mars TV series, played by Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), who was unable to reprise her role because of a scheduling clash.

Rob Thomas - creator of Veronica Mars and the film's writer director - wrote in an email to the project's Kickstarter backers: "One of the reasons I wanted Leighton, beyond her talent/beauty/history in the show, was that we needed a performer who could sing in this important role. Once it became evident that we couldn't make Leighton's schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie."

Thomas went on to praise Estella's "amazing voice" and confirm that at least two Twin Sister songs will feature in the film. Estella added: "I watched the Veronica Mars pilot and was totally into it! It's the exact kind of show I would get obsessed with, so it's been a bit of dream to be in a movie, especially being a messed-up rock princess. How could I say no? I think the VM fans are going to be very happy!"

Thomas started shooting the Veronica Mars movie last month (June) after he and the show's star Kristen Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project and raised over $5.7 million (£3.8 million) - almost triple the $2 million (£1.3 million) target. Percy Daggs III, Chris Lowell and Francis Capra have also reprised their roles from the cult teen series, which originally aired between 2004 and 2007, while James Franco and Justin Long have signed up for cameos.

Twin Sister released their debut album 'In Heaven' in 2011 and their song 'Meet The Frownies' was sampled by Kendrick Lamar on 'The Recipe', a track from his recent album 'Good Kid, MAAD City'. You can watch the video for their track 'Nectarine' below.
