Violent 'Gangster Squad' trailer pulled following 'The Dark Knight Rises' shooting

12 people were killed at a cinema in Colorado during a midnight screening of the new Batman film

A version of the trailer for the forthcoming Ryan Gosling movie Gangster Squad has been pulled by Warner Bros., following the Colorado cinema shooting which left 12 dead.

The LA Times reports that the trailer, which sees a shooting set in Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood will now no longer play, following the killings which took place during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado in the early hours of today (July 20).

The French premiere of the film, which was due to take place today, has been cancelled as a mark of respect. In a statement – via NY Daily News - Warner Bros. said: "Warner Bros. and the filmmakers are deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."

Reports that The Dark Knight Rises was to be pulled from all cinemas have been refuted by Variety's film editor, Josh Dickey, who tweeted:

We're told reports that WB considering pulling #TDKR screenings tonight are untrue. Showtimes going on as scheduled.

71 people were shot by suspect James Holmes, 24, a former University of Colorado medical school student, who had his hair painted red and reportedly said to police that he was 'The Joker'. He entered the cinema through an emergency door 20 minutes into the film's screening and set off tear gas/smoke canisters before opening fire.
