Manchester
The posters in Oxford Road's Gardens Hotel read "We can do what we want forever", a slogan that neatly sums up this legendary musical hotspot's outlook, from Oasis to The Stone Roses. It's not all about heritage, though: Manchester's scene is buzzing once more thanks to mouthy conquerors The Courteeneers, as well as up-and-coming scamps Twisted Wheel. Clubland is healthier than ever too, thanks to quirky venues such as pre-club bar Fab Café, decked out in sci-fi décor.
Alumni: Oasis, Stone Roses, Joy Division, The Smiths.
Pub fact: The Deaf Institute, a recently-opened club, is home to the world's largest glitterball.
