Norwich
It's hardly known as a hub of groundbreaking musical happenings, but you'd be surprised: Norwich is home to a good deal of entrepreneurial activity, with a number of independent labels, including Howlback Hum, NR One and Hungry Audio. Meanwhile, clubs such as Meltdown at the Waterfront keep indie fans happy week in, week out with no-brainer favourites and cheap drinks.
Alumni: Bloc Party’s Matt Tong was a UEA Student, and Radio 1’s Tim Westwood is the son of a local vicar.
Pub fact: It was at the Norwich Arts Centre that then-NME writer Steve Lamacq watched Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey Edwards carve '4 Real' into his arm.
