This week, when we looked through the Crypt’s magic window, we saw alt-folk singer-songwriter Samantha Whates kicking her heals outside. So naturally, we asked her in for a cuppa and a sing-song.
Samantha was born in Yorkshire, raised in Scotland and the Middle East and now lives in London. She states contemporary Scandinavian music as a big influence, but we reckon her muse is currently residing in a bothy on Scotland’s beautiful Western Isles. Her songs, like her voice and guitar playing, are tender, reflective and very pretty. But there’s often the suggestion of a wicker man burning in the distance, just to keep you honest.
With one of her songs already picked up by BBC 6 Radio’s Tom Robinson, Samantha’s due to release an album early next year through Natural Studio Records. We’re looking forward to it. You can hear more of her songs on her MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/samanthawhates
