About The Band

A young, (18-20 yrs old) intelligent and energetic 4 piece from Reading. Inspirations lie with the likes of Cohen, Beatles, Kinks, Morrissey, Simon & Garfunkle and Dylan to name but a few.

In the past few months have sold out gigs in their home town, appeared on the airwaves across the world (from Las Vegas to Holland) been invited to play in the Middle East and recently been selected by Mercedes-Benz as being one of the best new sounds around and added to a compilation mix tape that the car manufacturer distributes for free.

The focus is on lyrics and melody, have a listen and please leave any comments on www.myspace.com/abeggarsopera

REVIEWS:

"I haven't seen A Beggar's Opera in a while; I'm really looking forward to it. With their cute harmonies, nice shoes, angelic looks and Libertines/Beatles style tunes they're always good to watch. Thirty minutes later and I'm blown away. Their set is tight and they have put some great new songs. Put it simply these four lads have really pulled it out of the bag.The sonic variety of their set is awesome, it's a jaunty jog through a sound-scape that incorporates large doses of beat and harmony, some angst-y guitar pop, a spot of harmonica a hint of grove and even some sort of la-de-da something or other. The songs are short and snappy. Melodies are thick and catchy. Despite leaping between styles and textures within and between tracks, A Beggar's Opera, due to their accomplished musicianship and over-riding sense of mirth, somehow achieve an over-riding sense of incredible overall coherence."

Blah Blah Magazine

"..never do care, tonight was rescued by none other than local 'shoestring' storytellers; A Beggar's Opera. Full of very excellent songs with reference points spearing through The Beatles, Bob Dylan with a smattering of The Kinks toward a more up-to-date, more melodic Libertines. They possessed the kind of confidence that a band who had been touring for years would have. The lyrical content was much about championing the 'underdog', stories about being in front of the magistrates and references to Stalin. The content and the lyrics set these guys apart from other Libertines infused meanderings. They also did a cover of Bob Dylan's 'No Direction Home' which was brilliantly done and very daring...i don't think we'd have missed it had it not been there."

Decode Magazine

"Now despite A Beggar's Opera looking like tousle-mopped young guns there's an inescapable air of refinement about them. That they're named after an 18th century satirical play is a bit of a giveaway. It's also their music that has this dichotomy of devil-may-care decadence and polished discernment. The two sharp-looking blond brothers share vocal duties, harmonising and singing great modern pop songs sculpted from bits of The Libertines, The Beatles and Dylan. The song Crazy I Know is a hit-in-the-making - Judging by their performance tonight ABO have the ability to rocket into stardom. Their rock 'n' roll scowls will soon burn in the hearts of female fans and one bright day their songs will be sung anthem-like at festivals."
