The Drain Pipes are a 4-piece energetic indie/punk band from Manchester, whose name comes from the bands ever-tight performances. The band formed in November 2005 and in their first year played 33 gigs up and down the UK including a festival slot at Manchesters Bridgewater Hall and support slots with Les Incompetents, The Holloways, The Pigeon Detectives and Our Fold to name a few. A five track EP was released in June 2006, giving the band exposure in many parts of the country.
It has also been a promising start to 2007 to grabbing a slot in the North West leg of the Transit Tour, and having gigs lined up in various parts of the country up until summer. With an expanding song catalogue of love, hate, jealousy and loneliness the Drain Pipes will carry on to give off the ever tight performances here, there and everywhere.
Review from Overplay.com
In a post-Arctic Monkeys world, its a wonder that there isnt a deluge of shouty northern bands clogging up Myspace and clamouring for attention. And even though Manchester four-piece The Drain Pipes exhibit all the right symptoms (frazzled riffs, sneering vocals, pointed observations), theirs is still a very different sound. Across the five tracks here plus an uncredited acoustic treat the bands lo-fi indie and fractured poetry owe just as much to The Fall, The Smiths and Half Man Half Biscuit as Alex Turner and chums.
In My Shoes is an innocent enough introduction, coming on like the evil twin to Madness Our House. Tell your family I dont want to fight, sings frontman Shaun Gilroy. Following that, Transparent Minds and Standing On The Other Side are both spirited blasts of Buzzcocks-style punk pop - complete with some fantastically lacklustre whoa-oh backing vocals.
Its on the two remaining songs, though, that the band make you believe they might be in with a stab at greatness. More Than Friends is a killer pop tune that trounces anything from the Arctics and throws in a wizard bass guitar solo. And on the sloppily anthemic Special, The Drain Pipes pull of a sound of intense drama with all the approachable charm of Fern Britton talking about cardigans on This Morning. Its a beautifully grubby and poetic ode to loneliness as Shaun pines, Every time I talk to you, someone takes you away from me. Radioheads Creep with added custard creams, this is the sound of folk music for modern Britain.
