The Lemonheads' seminal 1992 record 'It's A Shame About Ray' has been honoured with the Classic Album award at the NME Awards USA in Los Angeles tonight (April 23).
Led by Evan Dando, the group received their award, presented by Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz and voted for by NME's editors, at the El Rey Theatre.
Explaining the decision, NME Editor Conor McNicholas said: "This is an award voted by the editors of NME to give due appreciation to works of integrity and originality which have had a significant influence over the alternative music scene we all love.
"It is entirely fitting that The Lemonheads' 'It's A Shame About Ray' should be our inaugural choice. It is an album of great charm and warmth that stands the test of time and you can hear echoes of the album in loads of the great new music being made today."
With the British NME Awards already a key event on the global music scene, this year marks the launch of the NME Awards in north America.
