30 Seconds To Mars make their Download debut
Aiden and My Alamo also kick off the second day
30 Seconds To Mars made their Download debut this afternoon (June 9) as they kicked off the second day at Donington Park.
Jared Leto’s band attracted a mass audience to the Main Stage as the California trio played tracks from their self-titled debut and follow up ‘A Beautiful Lie’ in the baking heat.
Clearly humbled by the occasion Leto told the crowd: “I have to say there is something special about Download. I noticed that when we were coming in. I’ll never forget this moment as long as I live.”
The singer, who appeared in the Hollywood blockbuster ’Fight Club’, later leaned into the crowd as he sang ‘The Fantasy’.
Meanwhile, My Alamo kicked off the day’s proceedings over at the Tuborg Stage.
The four-piece played a short set which included included single ‘1994’, a track dedicated to late American comedian Bill Hicks.
“Bill Hicks is a fucking legend,” guitarist Zach Beckett told the crowd. “We love him. This one is about him.”
Earlier, Aiden opened the day on the Main Stage as early festival goers descended on the site.
Singer WiL Francis told the crowd how happy he was to be playing the festival.
He said: “When I was growing up I used to see pictures of bands playing. Bands like Queen and AC/DC. It’s a fucking honour to be here.”
Francis also revealed that the band were working on new material.
“We’re recording our new album in Seattle – it’s called ’Conviction’.”
Later, fans turned out in their droves to see thrash metal veterans Slayer take to the Main Stage.
The band played a host of tracks from their back catalogue including 'Cult' from their most recent album 'Christ Illusion'.
