Coldplay accused of copying 'Viva La Vida' melody

Coldplay

Coldplay

Chris Martin and co deny Brooklyn band's claims

An American indie band have implied that Coldplay knowingly copied one of their melodies for new song 'Viva La Vida' - something the British group have strongly denied.

Posting their claims in a Youtube clip, Brooklyn group Creaky Boards alledge that the melody in Chris Martin and co's track sounds very similar to one of their songs - and that the Coldplay frontman may have even seen them play live last year.

Including footage of the band playing at the New York CMJ festival in October 2007, a caption posted by songwriter Andrew Hoepfner reads: "We were flattered when we thought we saw Chris Martin in the crowd that night. He seemed pretty into it. Maybe too into it."

He then adds: "The crazy thing is that my song is actually called 'The Songs I Didn't Write'."

The clip compares sections of both songs to allow viewers to make up their minds.

Hoepfner then concludes the video with a caption, saying: "Anyway, I wish Coldplay the best of luck. If they ever want to collaborate, I've got some microphones we could use in my bedroom. I'm gonna get ready to play a show now. I hope the soundguy remembers to pass the tip jar..."

You can watch the full clip below.

However a spokesperson for Coldplay denied Creaky Boards' claims, explaining that 'Viva La Vida' was actually written and demoed in March 2007.

Meanwhile, the band are set to play a free gig at Brixton Academy tonight (June 16) - see NME.COM for a live report later today.

Most of the album was lifted from the Hoosiers, but same target audience I guess...

"Shit indie band seeks free publicity" shocker. Let's move straight past the fact that the moustache bloke looks like he's probably on the sex offender's register and straight on to the fact that yes they're strikingly similar but what are you gonna do about it you no-marks? Sour grapes, anyone? Well done you've made it onto the NME website by complaining so you can shut up now.

Um, I think 'strikingly similar' is a slight overstatement there. There's a passing resemblance that I don't think I would have picked up without it being pointed out. If they honestly thought Chris Martin had stolen it wouldn't they go down a more official route than YouTube.Free publicity FTW.

I don't actually think they sound alike at all. It just shocks me why this guy has to complain about someone stealing his song in order to get publicity ! How would you be proud of doing that, its not like he's actually written a good song is it...

Ah, another cry for attention from a mediocre American indie band. Fair enough, the tracks are somewhat more than remotely similar, but what's the point in complaining about it? I'm sure "Creaky Boards" need the exposure though, if they're dependent on a tip jar to survive. Poor people. It's hard to be musicians these days.

nahnahnah, you are basically saying that only big, established bands can have any rights in music and can do pretty much whatever they want, including ripping off other people's work! It's that attitude which is killing independant music!P.S. the songs aren't really that similar, it's the principle of what you said.

Busted Mr. Martin! And the creakyboards song is miles better. Perhaps it was accidentally stolen during one of Martin's sleeping pill stupours.

Maybe Coldplay felt sorry for them and their shit song. Let's face it, if they have copied it, they've made it a hundred times better.

Well, that band certainly made a blinding impression on me with that song... there couldn't be any possibility that Chris would've missed that trail-blazing song imprinting itself on his brain cellsCreaky Boards? Pah!

Jun 16, 2008

it's not that similar, and for all chris martins faults atleast he hasn't got that stupid moustache. the guy is a sour creep, as if itunes would use his song, its not about the song its about coldplay... being one of the biggest bands around!

If they passed the tip jar to me, I'd suggest they're shit and should disband and get real jobs. It's as good a tip as any, maybe then they wouldn't be under the false impression they are actually any good.

your kidding me right. Melody's are stolen all the time. Slightly similar. And that other band "creaky boards" or whatever, are pretty shit. Im surprised chris martin even went to that show at all.

I_hate_underscores“nahnahnah, you are basically saying that only big, established bands can have any rights in music and can do pretty much whatever they want, including ripping off” etc etc etc etcWhat a load of rubbish.......the “principle” of the matter is one band saying to another band you have ripped off my song. The songs sound a little similar, but not to the point were some lawyer will be rubbing his hands together. Besides the same could be said of many songs. It has nothing to do with big band vs little band and has got everything to with a struggling band jumping on anything it can to get its name in the paper. What better than a big band releasing a new album.I think Coldplay are a load of old shite anyway.....but shoud tell Creaky Carpet or whatever to f*ck right off

I don't see what the big fuss is. It just sounds like U2 anyway. Coldplay are gash.

nahnahnah you're clearly a deranged fan of those absurd popinjays Cold Porridge to defend them like that. Fact is, both songs are tripe. Pip-pip!

What a Croc Of s*** Coldplay are. Band of Dick Turpins, daylight robbery. This band have no morals.

gazmassie

Jun 16, 2008

So a bit of Coldplays song sounds similar to yours. Fuck me, its not the first time this has happened. There is a riff in Hindu Times by Oasis which is EXACTLY the same as Same Size Feet by Stereophonics. It happens all the time. Get over it

mick_hartt

Jun 16, 2008

parts of the melody of Violet Hill sounds like Toy Soldiers by Martika too.

Jun 16, 2008

oh, come on. rhcp stole dani california from tom petty - he was OK with it. It happens all the time. And Coldplay's "version" is a better song regardless.

uhmm...let me see..."the songs I didn't write" (we could only wish!) = annoying trite melody"Viva la Vida" = annoying trite melody...Ladies and gentlemen of the jury there are two deductions to be made from this sordid affair:(a) Mr. Martin and Coldplay have run out of ideas (I suspected as much years ago) and (b) this song is substandard material, or, more simply put: a polished turd.VERDICT: We find the defendant AND the accused, guilty of poor taste in the first degree.SENTENCING: Chris Martin & Andrew Hoepfner will "exchange" their lives for 30 days. Andrew: have fun with Gwyneth. Chris: have fun at Burger King.Court is adjourned

I smell a Chris Morris-esq effort (now a collective noun) behind this. Love the reaction you got, though (see below).

nahnahnah, andrew hoepfner has been on NME several times before: http://www.nme.com/video/id/IUje0bgcp1g/search/afterlifeThere's one time. He's playing bass there. And I am loving this right now. Chris Martin quoted saying, "We look at what other people are doing and try and steal all the good bits. We steal from so many different places that hopefully it becomes untraceable."And the note progressions...Creaky -333 3 2 4 2222 1 >7 1 3Cold -333 3 4 2 2222 1 3> 5 6and that level of similarity continues…This is great. Down with major label shit . Support indie bands!

Cheers Jorges, and there was me thinking sarcasm and jury jokes were going to rule the world, nice to see that some people out there still have the common decency to avoid that sort of shite! On another note, I'm a huge fan of Coldplay and hate the way people write off people's opinions because of who they are. I'm a middle class student and fucking proud of it! My status does not make my opinion any more or less valid than yours because I'm not aware of some obscure little indie band or worship them because they're not famous. On that note, kill it kid are amazing. And anyone who disagrees must be a middle class student and, therefore, an idiot.

After considerable research, I have discovered that all the songs on the current charts use the same 12 notes, just shifted up and down a bit! Even worse, these fraudsters are using the same combinations of notes that were invented hundreds of years ago! OMG! Here's your 15 minutes of YouTube fame, now piss off.

jorges

Jun 17, 2008

Tremor: It's ok to like Coldplay, just as it is ok to dislike them. That "major label VS indie bands" argument is for high schoolers. But don't worry, in a few of years there won't be any major label bands or indie bands left; just good bands and bad bands. oh, but of course we'll still have to deal with the distinction between good and bad taste.

mrsmith92

Jun 17, 2008

fair enough, you'd be pissed of when you found someone uses the same melody as you, whether it is intentional or not. so you may as well get some free publicity from it.

YB_Berk

Aug 15, 2008

It sounds completely different. Some bands are dying to be in the limelight and to me they sound shit. Whats the point in making that video? Obviously more people are going to stick up for Coldplay because there a better band, now piss off you ****
