Reverend And The Makers headline Club NME bash

Reverend And The Makers headlined the Club NME New Year's Eve Ball last night (December 31) as thousands of fans saw in 2009 at the London Koko venue.

During the set Jon 'The Reverend' McClure paid tribute to Lily Allen, who he singled out for praise on the music scene for her forthright views.

"I wanna big up Lily Allen," he said shortly into the set, which began at 11:30pm (GMT). "Since 9/11 she's the only other person apart from me who has stood up and said something about the world."

The band, playing after Pete And The Pirates, had started their set with recent club-only release 'Silence Is Talking'. They stopped playing just before midnight to lead a countdown to 2009, then played 'Heavyweight Champion Of The World' after fans had cheered in the strike of 12.

Later in the set rapper Lowkey, a bandmate of McClure in his 'other' band Mongrel, rapped on stage and held a placard reading, "Freedom for Palestine".

Following the set NME Radio DJ Chris Martin played indie hits into the early hours.

The only person to stand and say something? Oh, apart from everyone else to stand up and say something, you self righteous prick.

What exactly have they done apart from pose, preen and put out increasingly shit songs? What a total cock. He's living in some kind of dream world if he considers himself and the spawn of Keith Allen to be revolutionary.

Arise, the new Bono.

Oh come on! They're great, who wants a boring front man afraid to give it to the crowd? Especially on NYE! Disagree with the increasingly shit songs comment, 'Nobody told her she'd ever reach the stage, where her husband bored her and she lied about her age'. Genius! I had a brilliant night lads, cheers!

How he managed to congratulate himself on his great work is beyond anything. It's great someone is trying, but still.......someone else please?

I'm not commenting on his music 'cause I think he's alright but that is an absolutely ridiculous thing to say! Sounds like Bono (without the attention of the world and the hundreds of thousands of records sold) I don't even know what he's on about, what has he and Lilly Allen said about the world that us in the misguided masses don't have the courage to say? What does he know? If you can write quite good lyrics about the suburbs doesn't mean you can tell everyone else what's wrong with the world!!!!!

now that is what we call either a big statement, or a very small horizon. Not that I have anything terrible against Lily Allen, but I wouldn't say that she's exactly John Lennon, or for that matter Jello Biafra. She's not even saving the children like jacko (although some would argue about exactly how he expresses that love).Let's face it, Lily is hardly a political orator of global scope. Did you hear the one about the spoof single that somebody did that was aired on the BBC? The lyrics were about sitting down and drinking some tea over a garage band stock beat. What's funny is that somebody rang in to the radio and lauded the fake single "a welcome return to form". Kinda says it all.

What a nitwit. Has Lily said anything about the world or is she too busy falling out of nightclubs? i think he probably wants to give her a little kiss or something...
