ABBA's 'Gold' overtakes' 'Sgt. Pepper's' to become UK's second biggest selling album of all time
ABBA's 'Gold' has overtaken The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' to become the UK's second biggest selling album of all time.

Just like the Fab Four's iconic 1967 album, the Eurovision group's greatest hits collection has sold more than 5.1 million copies in the UK alone. However, Abba have nudged ahead with 15,000 more sales, according to the Official Charts Company.

Queen's 1981 Greatest Hits album remains the UK's biggest selling album of all-time with 5.9 million sales, Adele’s 2011 album '21' is at Number Four on 4.6million and Oasis' second album '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?' completes the Top Five.

Speaking to Officialcharts.com about the achievement, ABBA founder and songwriter, Björn Ulvaeus, said: "It's feels unreal - outselling the greatest record of all time!"

'Gold' features all nine of the Swedish band's Number One singles, including 'Waterloo', 'Mamma Mia', 'Fernando', 'Dancing Queen', 'Knowing Me Knowing You', 'The Name Of The Game', 'Take A Chance On Me', 'The Winner Takes It All' and 'Super Trouper'. The album has spent a total of eight weeks at Number One on the Official UK Album Chart.

Last year, it was announced that 'Gold' was the UK's all-time best selling CD. At the time, the album had shifted over 4million copies on the format.

Meanwhile, ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson wrote the official theme for this year's Eurovision Song Contest. The annual singing competition was won last night (May 18) by Denmark's Emmelie de Forest.
