Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is trying to make amends with Adele for calling her "too fat" by sending her luxury handbags.

Lagerfeld, who is the head of the fashion house of Chanel, dropped a clanger last month (February 7) when he said that although he was a fan of the '21' songstress and her "divine voice", she was a "little too fat".

He later apologised for his comments, but his remarks were enough to draw the ire of Madonna – who said his jibes were "ridiculous" – and now, according to The Sun, he has stepped up his grovelling by sending her the finest handbags at his disposal, as a peace offering.

"Karl has been filming for the new YouTube Chanel TV channel and mentioned his plans to patch things up," said a source. "He told his team to send Adele the best the fashion house have to offer after hearing she collected bags. He said he really wanted to make it up to her so they could maybe work together in the future."

They went on to add:

He could see her fronting a campaign for Chanel Mademoiselle bags when the contract with Blake Lively ends. He's annoyed with himself because he ended up insulting her when he meant to compliment her. He thinks she's beautiful and calls her divine.

Whether Lagerfeld's freebies will work in placating Adele remains to be seen – especially as the singer's recent decision to splash the cash on a £7 million, 10-bedroom mansion would suggest she doesn't need any hand-me-outs.

Yesterday (April 2), the singer confirmed that she would release a new track by the end of 2012, although she continues to stick to her guns on her pledge that the follow-up to '21' won't be released for at least another two years.
