Adele: 'I don't want to be a celebrity'

'21' songstress says she's only interested in singing

Adele has insisted that she doesn't want to be a celebrity.

The Tottenham-born songstress has enjoyed phenomenal success since the release of her second album '21', which has sold over 4 million copies and overtook Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' in the UK's all-time biggest selling albums list earlier this month (May 3).

But in an interview for US TV channel NBC, the star – who was named as the UK's richest musician under 30 earlier this week (May 12) – said she that she is only interested in singing and that being famous was irrelevant to her.

She said:

I don't want to be a celebrity. I don't want to be in people's faces.

She went on to add: "I've managed to stay out of the public eye. The other day I walked through Trafalgar Square on a Sunday afternoon, a tourist haven. I was a bit worried. I was in my pyjamas as well because I had been working the day before. [But] nobody recognised me. A couple of people looked round, but they were like 'What would she be doing walking through Trafalgar Square in pyjamas?'"

When asked how she'd like to be remembered in 10 years' time, meanwhile, she replied: "I just want to make music. I mean, I still hope I have a little bit of clout in 10 years. But all I've ever wanted to do was sing."

Last month (April 2), Adele promised that she would release a new song this year, but insisted that she would not release a new album for at least another two years. In the meantime, the popularity of '21' shows no signs of abating - in the 15 months since it was released, it has spent 66 non-consecutive weeks on the Official Albums Chart, with 23 of those at Number One. It has also outsold Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black' to become the biggest selling album of the 21st Century.
