ALANIS PLAYS GOD

Alanis Morissette is to appear in the new film by Clerks and Chasing Amy director Kevin Smith. She will play God. The film, called Dogma and currently being filmed in Pittsburgh, is a comedic take on the Bible and stars the Oscar-winning partnership of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as two angels who are banished from heaven to Wisconsin. Morissette blocks the gate to heaven when Affleck and Damon try to re-enter.

Emma Thompson was originally tipped to play Morissette's role, but is no longer involved in the production, according to a Miramax spokesperson. Chris Rock, Alan Rickman and Salma Hayek also star in the film, which was written by Smith before he filmed Clerks in 1994.

Morissette is the latest female musician to star in a religious capacity. Sinead O'Connor appears as the Virgin Mary in Neil Jordan's new film The Butcher Boy and Polly Harvey appears as Jesus' bodyguard Magdalana in the new Hal Hartley film The Book Of Life.
