Amy Winehouse voted 'top heroine' for UK youths

Pete Doherty was also voted a hero in the poll

Amy Winehouse has been voted the ultimate heroine among the UK's youth.

A new poll of people under 25 conducted by Sky.com found that the singer was rated above Princess Diana in the top heroine category.

Babyshambles singer/guitarist Pete Doherty was voted the second most popular male hero, behind footballer Stephen Gerrard.

Psychologist Donna Dawson told PA that Winehouse may have topped the poll because she "seems to portray a certain sense of vulnerability or having had to fight against some adversity in their lives".

Among the general population, with categories not restricted by gender or age, Winston Churchill was voted top hero figure. Elvis Presley came second.

I'm sorry but if i ever caught anyone i knew saying the idolised her i would slap them round the mouth, say sorry...then slap them again harder, and not say sorry....dirty dirty amy winehouse.

This is possibly the stupidest thing i've ever seen, voted a hero for being a drug addict. She brought the adversity onto herself, just because she is famous and alot of attention on her didnt mean she had to take drugs. And also pete docherty a hero jesus, what the hell is going on..i think maybe im going to start taking drugs be an absolute moron, get put in prison then can I be a hero too

dear micro_cuts Yeah but this is the NME, who a couple of years ago voted talentless shitstain smack enthusiast pete doherty as top of its "cool list". So you can see how concerned they are with providing good role models for their increasingly puerile teenage readership. Bet they don't post this - they never post anything that criticises them.

I would be completely shocked at this, but if you look at all the other nominees it's clear this Poll is a whole load of b*****ks anyway....bar Churchill :)

I think you are missing the point. Amy Winehouse is a mega talented, mega successful singer/songwriter. She does not conform to the typical airhead/bimbo/wag wannabe that floods the media daily. She was making unquestionably good music - her album Frank is still in the top 40 - way before her 'drug addiction' became a way for the tabloids to sell a few more copies. The sooner people realise that Winehouse never wanted to be made into a role model for young kids, the sooner her addictions will became less of a focus and we can go back to wholeheartedly appreciating her for the MUSICAL genius that she is!

The only reason Frank is still in the top 40 is becuase she is constantly being galmorised by tabloids and NME. If she didnt want to be portrayed like this maybe she would actually piss off for a while and actually get clean. Thats never gonna happen tho...she knows how much attention she gets from it.ALSO, We need to realise that this survay was conducted by SKY.COM therefor no one actually gives a shit about the results. A bit like all those channel 4 100 greatest shows that noone watched and gave a shit about....

About time Peter got mentioned as a hero again, i mean it's been a few months since the NME awards now! Well done Peter, we love you!

Amy Winehouse frustrates me because she's incredibly talented but such a waste of a human being. she's definitely becoming somewhat of a British icon but she should not be considered a role model.

Pete Doherty, second? just goes to show the sorry state of popular culture today! The man was born a heroe and forever will be a heroe, i think those voting otherwise need to put down whatever redtop poison their reading and put on 'up the bracket' and remind themselves of what makes Pete the heroe he truly is! The likes of Joe Strummer and John Lennon will be turning in their grave knowing the only genuine heroe this generation has been provided with is being ignored because the headlines have more of an impact than the actual music! Pete Doherty Number 1

Some of you are deaf twats. They are both hailed for their talent. With Amy, its her amazing voice . And with Pete its his contribution to the music industry through his days in the Libertines, and his influence on popular culture whether that be through fashion or making kids pick up a guitar again. Its those amazingly crafted songs that keeps us awake. Its a shame you daft twats can't take a second to actually allow yourselves to be amazed. Yes, hes a junkie. Whats new? But I doubt the cross section of Brit society who've hailed him are hailing him because they find drugs glamourise. Time for Heroes anyone?
