Amy Winehouse died today (July 23) aged 27.

The singer was found dead in her flat in Camden, London at around 4pm (BST). Paramedics attended the scene but were unable to revive her. The cause of her death is still unexplained and police are treating the area around her flat as a crime scene.

News of the death comes days after Winehouse made her public return in London on Wednesday at a gig by her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield. The singer appeared at the Camden Roundhouse during the 15-year-old's set as part of the iTunes Festival.

Winehouse grew up the Southgate area of north London and developed an interest in jazz from an early age. The daughter of taxi driver Mitch and pharmacist Janis, Winehouse attended the Brit School following a short spell at the Sylvia Young Theatre School.

After graduating, Winehouse found fame at the age of 20 with her 2003 debut album 'Frank', which was nominated for the Mercury Prize and went on to go triple platinum in the UK.

But it was her 2006 follow-up 'Back To Black' which saw her enjoy global success, boasting the hit singles 'Rehab', 'You Know I'm No Good' and 'Love Is A Losing Game'. Her cover of The Zutons' 'Valerie', which appeared on Mark Ronson's 2007 album 'Version', was also an international hit single.

'Back To Black' went on to go eight times platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US and saw Winehouse win the Best British Female gong at the 2007 Brit Awards and five Grammys the following year.

However, since the release of the Ronson-produced LP, Winehouse has made headlines for problems in her personal life as much as her music. She endured a tempestuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, who she married in May 2007 and divorced in July 2009.

Her battles with substance abuse were well-documented. Problems with self-harm, depression and eating disorders were also discussed by the singer in interviews.

Winehouse had several spells in rehabilitation facilities and hospitals as she tried to kick her addictions. Tabloid reports had suggested she had been recently been struggling with an alcohol problem.

In 2008, her friendship with Pete Doherty hit the headlines when the pair filmed themselves playing with a litter of baby mice and uploaded the clips, one titled 'Winemouse', to YouTube. The pair also worked together on a Babyshambles track, 'You Hurt The Ones You Love', although it was never given an official release.

Winehouse also recorded a version of jazz standard 'Body And Soul' with Tony Bennett for the crooner's forthcoming 'Duets II' album. Scheduled to be released on September 20, the track was due to be Winehouse's first recorded appearance since 2007.

Last month she cancelled a 12-date European tour after a shambolic gig in Belgrade, Serbia where she appeared too intoxicated to sing. The show, at the city's Kalemegdan Park, proved to be her final live performance.
