Angel Haze criticises article linking Miley Cyrus' VMA performance to US rape case
The rapper has hit out at the piece in a series of tweets
In the piece, journalist Richard Cohen uses Cyrus' appearance at the awards show with Robin Thicke to discuss a "brutal and unfeeling" teenage culture of "sexual exploitation". Using the much-publicised Steubenville rape case - where an intoxicated high school student was sexually assaulted by two of her peers - Cohen suggests Cyrus twerking on stage is symptomatic of a "teenage culture that has set the women’s movement back on its heels."
Taking issue with the article, Haze tweeted her thoughts on the matter, writing: "Recently been asked about @MileyCyrus way too much. Was particularly perturbed by the whole washington post thing. Let me just vocalize how utterly fucking stupid I think it is for a national news publication to post that her dancing is why things like Steubenville happen."
She continued: "That is terrible journalism. Slut shaming and complete and total idiocy all at once. If @MileyCyrus wants to dance, let her. A female dancing doesn’t mean she's 'asking to be raped'. Quite frankly, if she is not doing it on you, it is not for you. Women are allowed to not feel enslaved by any opinion that suggests that the display of any sort of sexuality is wrong. Die, you are what's wrong with the world, it's 2013."
Concluding her diatribe, Haze then tweeted: "You should know by now that the word 'no' does not have various meanings and is not to be taken as anything but no. I just don't get it."
Meanwhile the rapper, who recently performed show at London venue Birthdays (September 5), is due to release her highly-anticipated debut album 'Dirty Gold' in early 2014. The album features production from Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Tegan and Sara) and Marcus Dravs (Coldplay, Mumford and Sons) and includes a track written by Australian singer-songwriter Sia, who has penned recent hits for Rihanna and Rita Ora.
