Aphex Twin on Kanye West: 'He tried to rip me off'
The DJ and producer speaks about West's use of his track 'Avril 14th' on 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’'s 'Blame Game'
The producer, who recently announced details of his forthcoming new album 'Syro', has accused West of ripping him off after the rapper appeared to sample his track 'Avril 14th' on 'Blame Game', which appeared on West's album 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'.
"Is it a sample? I actually don't know what it ended up being in the end, I'm so slack," the producer – real name Richard D James – told Pitchfork. "I know that he tried to fucking rip me off and claim that he'd written it, and they tried to get away with not paying."
"I was really helpful," he continued. "And when they first sent it to me, I was like, 'Oh, I can re-do that for you, if you like,' because they'd sampled it really badly and time-stretched it and there was loads of artefacts. I was like, 'I'll just replay it for you at that speed if you want.' And they totally didn't even say 'hello' or 'thanks' they just replied with, 'It's not yours, it's ours, and we're not even asking you any more.'"
A spokesperson for Kanye West did not return NME's request for comment.
'Syro' is the follow-up to 2001's 'Drukqs' and will be released on September 22. In another interview published over the weekend, James said that the album wouldn't be a one-off record, asserting that the project has him "kicked into gear".
Prior to the announcement, James teased fans with the possibility of a new album by flying a blimp over London bearing the Aphex Twin logo and the digits "2014". He eventually announced the album on the Deep Web.
