Arcade Fire, Cat Power Dark Was the Night project raises £400,000 for charity

Album raises money for HIV/AIDS causes

A charity record featuring contributions from Arcade Fire, Cat Power, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket and David Byrne has raised over £400,000 for The Red Hot Organization, which helps HIV/AIDS charities across the globe.

The record, called 'Dark Was The Night', featured 31 tracks and was put out by the 4AD label.

Released in February, it was the 20th album in the Red Hot series, and was produced by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National.

Martin Mills, the chairman of the Beggars Group of labels, has presented a cheque to the charity for £423,212.00, for the record's sales from the first half of 2009.

"We want to thank all of the artists and everyone at 4AD again for helping us make 'Dark Was The Night' happen," explained Aaron Dessner. "We also want to thank everyone who has bought this record - your donations amount to a very significant contribution to Red Hot's mission fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS. The initial amount raised from sales of the album exceeded our expectations and will only continue to grow."
