Arcade Fire to play UK festivals in 2014
Win Butler's comments spark rumours they'll headline Glastonbury
In an interview with Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2, Butler told fans that they should "get [their] wellies ready" in preparation for the UK festival season next summer, although he refused to give any more concrete details of which events he and his bandmates would be playing.
Asked by Whiley if they would be playing UK festivals in 2014, Butler said: "Yeah, I hope so. It's a special experience." Whiley then said she was looking forward to seeing the group next summer, leading Butler to teasingly respond: "Get your wellies ready!"
His comments have sparked speculation that Arcade Fire will play Glastonbury next year. The band recently announced a huge US arena tour to take place in 2014, but fans have spotted there is a gap in their schedule between June 22 and July 30 which could potentially be filled by a spot at Worthy Farm.
Whiley also fuelled the rumours by stating after her interview with the group: "The wellies have been bought for a certain UK festival – we know the one that has quite a reputation for rain and welly-wearing, we shall leave it at that."
During the interview, Butler also revealed that Coldplay frontman Chris Martin had disguised himself as a skeleton to help him DJ at an Arcade Fire show at London's Roundhouse earlier this month. Speaking about the gig, for which fans were asked to attend in either formal wear or fancy dress, Butler said: "He [Martin] was out at the DJ booth with me the other night wearing a skull mask. It was pretty cool. He was the hype man, he's an amazing hype man."
Yesterday, meanwhile, Arcade Fire revealed that they were issuing a dress code for next year's US arena tour. Butler had previously told fans at the Roundhouse that he was not apologetic for making formal of fancy dress mandatory for their UK gigs, announcing to the crowd: "To anyone who felt uncomfortable dressing up – I'm not sorry," said Butler. "At least 70 percent of you are getting laid tonight… As long as you showered. That's the secret. Boys."
