A fan has claimed that Arcade Fire's Win Butler and Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament accidentally broke his nose during a game of basketball at the Big Day Out festival in Auckland over the weekend.

Speaking to Triple J radio station, fan Sherif Hassan explained how he was invited to play with the musicians at an Auckland park during their downtime at the festival, which is currently touring Australia and New Zealand.

Discussing Ament, Hassan said: "He's aggressive, I'll tell you that much. He broke my nose. It was actually the last play of the game - the one time I decided to play proper defence. All I heard was Win going off about how the rules are rubbish down here, and throwing balls around and chucking a bit of a hissy fit."

However, Hassan said that the injury was "worth it", explaining that Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder gave him a shout out during his band's set: "It was worth it. [Ament] got us all tickets to the Auckland BDO and hooked us up with backstage passes. I got to meet Lorde, Major Lazer and Mac Miller... We got to the front of stage for Pearl Jam, and Eddie Vedder gave me a shout out."

Big Day Out, meanwhile, marks Beady Eye's first ever visit to Australia, with the band replacing Blur after they pulled out at the end of last year. Blur pulled out of the headline slot in November, saying they were unhappy with the way the festival was being organised. The festival's co-promoter AJ Maddah vowed to refund ticket-holders who are not happy with the changed line-up, although admitted that organisers were "completely caught with our pants down" and that being forced to book new acts at such late notice would not "be cheap".
