Arcade Fire begin Glastonbury headline set with a bang

The Canadian band topped the bill on the Pyramid Stage

Arcade Fire's set at Glastonbury tonight (June 27) began with fireworks, and hits old and new.

The Canadian band took to the stage 20 minutes late, following the temporary closure of the Pyramid Stage during an electrical storm in late afternoon.

The show began with the 'Reflektor man' walking on stage, decked out in a mirrored suit and hat. Apparently due to technical difficulties, a pre-recorded intro track stalled and stuttered as he stood with arms aloft, to the confusion of the crowd. Soon, fireworks burst from the tops of the rigging above the speakers and the band appeared, launching straight into the title track of their 2013 album, 'Reflektor'. Frontman Win Butler, wearing his now-familiar eye-mask-like makeup and black-and-white, skeleton-like suit jacket, went to the front row of the crowd during the song, took a mobile phone from a member of the crowd and returned to the stage, where he took pictures on the phone. It was returned to its owner during the next track.

Another track from 'Reflektor', the percussive 'Flashbulb Eyes' followed, as a hypnotic, black and white spiral swirled on the screen behind. The stage itself was a version of the set from Arcade Fire's ongoing touring show, including mirrored hexagonals overhead.

Fan-favourite track 'Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out)' followed, reaching a crashing crescendo and seguing straight into 'Rebellion (Lies)', during which a member of the crowd ignited a bright red flare. At the climax of the song, Will Butler stood at stag right beating a drum strapped to his chest as the crowd continued the song's melody. 'Joan Of Arc' and 'The Suburbs' followed.

Other headliners tonight include Skrillex, who tops the bill on the Other Stage, M.I.A on the West Holts Stage, Metronomy on the Park Stage and Kaiser Chiefs on the John Peel stage.

Check back later for a full Arcade Fire report.
