Arctic Monkeys have low-key Brits celebration

Plus the band play new song in Portsmouth

Arctic Monkeys celebrated their BRIT award win in low-key fashion on the ShockWaves NME Awards Tour 2006 last night (February 15).

Rather than attend the ceremony where they won the British Breakthrough prize, the band played their slot as scheduled as the four-band jaunt hit Portsmouth’s Guildhall.

Making just one reference to their success, frontman Alex Turner began his band’s set by telling the crowd “We won that BRIT Award anyway”.

Instead of attending the ceremony, the Sheffield band sent a video acceptance speech, which featured Keith Murray from tourmates We Are Scientists.

Meanwhile, the band played an energetic set that included one new song, 'Leaving Before The Lights Come On'.

Turner told the Portsmouth crowd “You can have ‘From The Rubble To The Ritz’ or a new song,” and with the audience calling for the new track the band indulged them.

Seemingly concerned with escaping a one night stand before realising that other person wasn’t as attractive as they thought at the time, the song's lyrics included: “Get out before the lights come up/ then you won’t see what you’ve done” and “I suppose that’s the price you pay… she thinks he’s looking different today”.

Completing the new song, Turner joked to the crowd “I don’t think you really liked that”, though there was loud applausive before the band completed their set which also included the likes of ‘When The Sun Goes Down’, ‘Fake Tales Of San Francisco’ and ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’.

The ShockWaves NME Awards Tour 2006 continues in Brighton tonight (February 16) before concluding in London the following day.
