Japanese Beatles band The Parrots open Manchester show

Arctic Monkeys’s first giant gig at Lancashire County Cricket Club’s Old Trafford ground has kicked off this afternoon (July 28).

Proceedings got underway at 3.30 pm (BST) when Japanese band The Parrots, a tribute to The Beatles, took to the stage.

The band were picked by Arctic Monkeys to open their Old Trafford gigs after seeing them while touring in Japan.

“They’re a Japanese Beatles tribute. We’ve seen them a couple of times when we’ve been over there and they were amazing,” frontman Alex Turner told NME.COM. “We’ve always said it would be great to get them, though we couldn’t really take them on a tour, so when this came up I thought it would be good to get them to open it. I didn’t know what tunes they’re going to do. They might come and do some really weird ones.”

As it turned out the band did pick an eclectic set list including the likes of ’Yellow Submarine’ album track ’Hey Bulldog’ and ’I’m Down’, the b-side from the single release of ’Help’.

However the band – who performed in matching turquoise jackets and played replicas of the Fab Four’s original instruments - also played a series of crowd favourites, with ’Day Tripper’, ’Taxman’, ’Come Together’ and ’Back To The USSR’, drawing loud sing-a-longs from the growing crowd.

They then wrapped up their set with a buzzing version of ’Revolution’ and a lung-bursting rendition of ’Twist And Shout’

Arctic MonkeysOld Trafford continues now with the band’s hand-picked bill.

Amy Winehouse is due on stage next, with The Coral and Supergrass to follow, before the band themselves take the stage.
