Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has revealed he is a huge comedy fan, citing US stand-up Louis CK as one of his favourite funnymen.

Speaking in an exclusive interview in this week's NME, which is on newsstands from today (July 31) and also available digitally, Turner draws a link between stand-up comedy routines and his own songwriting.

"There's a definite rock'n'roll thing to that world," Turner explains. "There's this thing where Louis CK is talking about George Carlin, who's this famous American comedian who used to completely tear up his act at the end of every year and throw it out and write a whole new act. And in doing that you eventually run out of things to talk about. So you start looking inside to whatever darkness may lay there. And that's where you end up going. I think there's a weird symmetry with that and songwriting. Or at least there is for me."

The band's fifth studio album 'AM' will be released on September 9 and features the singles 'R U Mine?' and 'Do I Wanna Know?'. Guests on the album include Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and former member of The Coral, Bill Ryder-Jones. Turner previously claimed that there was a rap and hip-hop influence on the album, saying one song sounds like Dr Dre.

Later this year, Arctic Monkeys will embark on a nine-date UK tour including a homecoming gig at Sheffield's Motorpoint Arena. Starting in Newcastle at the Metro Radio Arena on October 22, the tour will then visit Manchester, London, Liverpool, Cardiff, Birmingham and Glasgow before ending with the Sheffield gig on November 2. The Strypes will support on all dates.

Arctic Monkeys will play:

Newcastle Metro Radio Arena (October 22)
Manchester Arena (23)
London Earls Court (25, 26)
Liverpool Echo Arena (28)
Cardiff Motorpoint Arena (29)
Birmingham LG Arena (31)
Glasgow Hydro Arena (November 1)
Sheffield Motorpoint Arena (2)
