Yannis Philippakis appears to mock Alex Turner’s ‘Elvis impersonation’ as Foals win at Q Awards

Foals beat Arctic Monkeys to Best Live Band award. Vampire Weekend, Biffy Clyro and Ellie Goulding also pick up awards

Arctic Monkeys and Foals were among the winners at the Q Awards 2013, held in London earlier today (October 21), with Yannis Philippakis appearing to make fun of Alex Turner during his acceptance speech.

The annual ceremony was held at the Grosvenor House hotel, and also saw wins for Biffy Clyro, Jake Bugg, Manic Street Preachers, Ellie Goulding and Vampire Weekend. Happy Mondays, Robbie Williams, Suede and Pet Shop Boys all picked up outstanding contribution-type prizes. Scroll down to see the full list of winners now.

Upon picking up the award for Best Live Band ahead of Arctic Monkeys, Mumford & Sons, Muse and The Stone Roses, Foals’ Yannis Philippakis said: “It shows you don’t need a backing track, you don’t need affectation, you don’t need Elvis Presley impersonations,” reports BBC News.

Earlier this year Alex Turner responded to claims his on-stage persona was influenced by Elvis, saying: “I’ve been pointing my hands for ages though! Maybe it’s just the quiff confusing people? Jo Whiley just said I was channeling my inner Elvis, but I dunno man. It’s not intentional!”

‘Do I Wanna Know?’ by Arctic Monkeys was named Best Track while Biffy Clyro picked up the award for Best Album for ‘Opposites’. Acknowledging the fact that David Bowie did not win any of the six awards he was nominated for during his acceptance speech, Biffy frontman Simon Neil said: “Thank you so so much. I think I speak on every award winners behalf when I say thank goodness David Bowie didn’t turn up.”

Glastonbury won the award for Best Event ahead of Bowie’s exhibition at the V&A Museum, and Kraftwerk’s series of 3D live shows at Tate Modern while Chrissie Hynde, John Cooper Clarke and Belle & Sebastian were also among the winners.
