Singer speaks out in BBC interview

Pete Doherty went on national television last night (December 23) pledging to kick drugs and win back estranged girlfriend Kate Moss.

The embattled Babyshambles frontman announced his intention to be "George Best in reverse" during an interview with presenter Kirsty Wark for BBC2's Newsnight, a year after he was last interviewed by Wark for the programme.

When likened to footballer Best, who died recently, Doherty said: "Yeah, I'm going to have to do that in reverse. Hopefully I'm going to do it by having people hear my music. George Best became very famous for his football, right – his genius on the pitch – and then was swamped in what I call dead-monkey-brain-tabloid-fever, Whereas for me, it's going to be the other way round."

He also confirmed that his relationship with Moss was over. And responding to speculation that he might spill the beans to newspapers about his and Moss' private life together, Doherty told Wark that he had destroyed love letters, to avoid them falling into the wrong hands.

He said: "The only danger is I've got journals which I had to destroy. In horror I find myself destroying them just in case they fall into the wrong hands."
