Pete Doherty makes post-prison comeback

Band joined by Shane MacGowan in London

Pete Doherty made his live comeback with Babyshambles last night (May 14) at the London Kentish Town Forum.

The gig was his first since being released from Wormwood Scrubs prison, where he served 29 days of a 14-week sentence for breaching probation.

Doherty arrived at the venue at 9:20pm (BST) and signed a guitar for a fan before entering the building. He had a brief acoustic jam upstairs in the Babyshambles dressing room before heading onstage and opening with 'Pipedown'.

The singer/guitarist joked about being "a bit rusty" and draped a flag over the drum kit.

Eight songs into the set The Pogues' frontman Shane MacGowan came onstage and performed vocals for Ewan MacColl's song 'Dirty Old Town', wearing a large top hat. Later in the set Babyshambles covered 'Cool For Cats' by Squeeze.

The set was raucous and frenetic, with Doherty clearly pumped to be back on stage. There were a series of fan invasions during the gig, with security guards tussling with crowd members as they attempted to get near the singer.

The band ended with an encore, including regular set closer 'Fuck Forever'.

Babyshambles played:

'Pipedown'
'Beg, Steal Or Borrow'
'Delivery'
'UnBiloTitled'
'Untitled New Song'
'Carry On Up The Morning'
'Baddie's Boogie'
'Dirty Old Town'
'I Wish'
'Cool For Cats'
'Side Of The Road'
'Untitled New Song'
'Killamangiro'
'Maybelline'
'Crumb Begging Baghead'
'Albion'
'Back From The Dead'
'Fuck Forever'

last night was fantastic. It was great to see pete looking so well. Loved every second! And the new stuff sounds great. Like the sound of the Beggars who supported them too.

I've never seen PD & Babyshambles live before, and was not familiar with their music. But what an event - great tunes, great atmosphere. Doherty has an amazing stage presence.

I was there and it was awesome right from the start of 'pipedown' to the end of 'fuck forever'. They were on great form and on stage at 9.30! Pete laughed and joked and teased the security by constantly lighting up cigarettes when they took one off him and hugged and poured beer in the mouthes of stage invaders whom the security tried to remove. Drew McConnell doesn't get enough recigntition. He is a great bassist, singer and is gorgeous and should be given a medal for all his work with LMHR. He's stayed with Pete longer than the other current bandmates and through some tough times and if last night was anything to go by, it should all pay off. Pete seems to be really trying to get clean. Whether he has totally succeded yet, I couldn't say because I'd have no way of knowing.
