Babyshambles banned from headlining festival Babyshambles Tickets

Police say band could incite public disorder

Police have banned Pete Doherty and Babyshambles from performing at the Moonfest festival, set to take place on August 29-31 in Wiltshire.

Doherty's band were due to play at the bash on August 29, but a police investigation into Babyshambles' stage manner led them to draw the conclusion that their performance would be likely to incite violence.

Chief Superintendent Julian Kirby, divisional commander of Wiltshire Police, said: "We carried out an analysis of what Pete Doherty and his band does.

"What he does as part of his routine is to gee up the crowd. They speed up and then slow down the music and create a whirlpool effect in the crowd.

"They [the crowd] all get geed up and then they start fighting."

Police presented their findings to North Wiltshire Magistrates on Monday (August 17), who ordered festival organisers to cancel any appearance from Doherty or Babyshambles.

It is believed that the case represents the first time police anywhere in the country have used Section 160 of the Licensing Act (2003) to get a performance stopped, Gazette And Herald reports.

Despite the fact that only 150 tickets have currently been sold for the 5,000 capacity festival, Supt Paul Williams said that the ten stewards licensed to work at Moonfest would have been inadequate to cope with a public order situation.

Reacting to the police's decision, Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek said he was angry, but said that the band would try to organise an alternative show. "The whole thing is a farce, it's almost comical," he told NME.COM.

"The organiser of the festival is now on the verge of bankruptcy," he continued. "Why? Because we intentionally speed up and slow down the tempo of our songs. We're now in the process of trying to make it happen in a different venue. Watch this space."

This has to the most ridiculous story ive read. Are we living in the 1930's? LIke him or not, this surely can't be seen as a feesible reason not to let a band perform. Chief Superintendent Julian Kirby, you are a clown!

This is just daft! I know plenty of people who were going to go to this festival, just to see Babyshambles. Now that they're not going to be making appearance it's likely that those 150 people who have booked tickets will cancel...I feel sorry for the festival organiser really...Wiltshire police are terrible.

this is absolutely ridiculous! i've never heard anything like it. Babyshambles are denied playing music to 150 people but 2,500 fascists are free to gather and preach hate at the BNP festival.

Why aren't police stopping rap gigs, like lethal bizzle and dizzee rascal when their lyrics incite violence? Because that would be seen as racist. It just shows what a joke the police have became and it's no wonder that kids today don't have any respect at all for the police force.

I don't really think the fact that it is Babyshambles who are involved that is the issue here, rather that such a ridiculous judgement has been made by someone in such a powerful position with regards to a music event. Even if you think Babyshambles are the worst band ever (you'd be wrong!), this is still beyond ludicrous.Surely if the law is in place to allow such craziness, it sets a worrying precedent for the future of live music, particularly small, independent festivals?

The festival has now gone bust, thanks to Wilts. police. The tickets we bought as a birthday gift for our son, worthless. To quote Wilts. police: "The issue is not the act itself, it is the profile of fans that follow the act." This is outrageous - are the police claiming that all fans conform to a particular type that make them essentially a social menace? This is leaning dangerously close to facism. It's worrying that the police have 'profiled' my son (17 year old A grade A level student with no previous etc., and a damn good kid) in such a way. Does that mean that when in Wilts. (he often visits) he's going to be targeted as a danger to society, and arrested on suspicion of anything going if he wears his Babyshambles T shirt? I'll warn him to cover up when in the area, lest he get arrested. The band is not to my taste, but for the police to pre-judge each and every fan in this way is attrocious, and surely in some way contravenes civil liberties. And if they can do it to this band, they can do it to others, so take note of this precedent...
