Beck has described confidence as his "Achilles' Heel" in a new interview.

Speaking to Billboard, the musician opened up about his back catalogue and the "safe" decisions he made on some of his earlier records.

"If I had more [confidence], I probably would have felt emboldened to make more interesting music earlier on, or really go for it in an artistic or songwriting sense," he told the magazine. "I've seen that kind of confidence serve other people really well. I really admire it. Like, I hope my kids have some of that kind of confidence that enables you to take risks."

Citing the Nigel Godrich-produced 1998 record 'Mutations' as the turning point where he began to feel comfortable making more personal music again, Beck recalled: "When I started out playing small clubs, you could feel the room recoil from certain kinds of songs. Anything that was too personal, that had a sentiment to it, or was laying out your feelings, was immediately booed. People would start throwing things. And anything that was really provocative or humorous or radical was embraced or cheered. So that fostered in me a sort of mode of survival."

The singer, who will release his latest album 'Morning Phase' on February 24, also revealed that some high profile collaborations could be made available later in the year. He told Billboard he set the tracks aside to focus on his new record but they could see the light of day before the end of 2014 "time willing".
