Beck, She & Him, Devendra Banhart help compile Louvin Brothers compilation album
Will Oldham, Mark Lanegan and Dolly Parton also pick songs for the album of country music classics
Beck, Zooey Deschanel and M Ward of She And Him, Devendra Banhart, Dolly Parton, Will Oldham, Mark Lanegan, Graham Nash, Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson and Chris Hillman have all picked their favourite tracks by The Louvin Brothers for the compilation, which is set for release on November 7.
The duo's 1959 album 'Satan Is Real' will be reissued on the same day, with both albums making up a double CD. The Louvin Brothers were made members of the Grand Ole Opry in 1955 and split in 1963. Ira Louvin died in a car crash in 1965, and his brother Charlie passed away in January of this year, aged 83.
Of her choice 'You're Running Wild' Zooey Deschanel says:
I am always in the mood for a Louvin Brothers record. I am happy to hear them when I wake up in the morning or have their sweet harmonies lull me to sleep at night. It's difficult to pick a favorite song, I would say, 'You're Running Wild' because it's so plaintive, so melancholy, so raw.
Dolly Parton said of her pick, 'Cash On The Barrel Head':
I love all the Louvin Brothers songs and used to sing them all growing up… still do. I suppose the one I would single out is 'Cash On The Barrelhead', as it is my husband’s favourite and a song that I recorded for my bluegrass album 'The Grass Is Blue'. I especially love the mandolin turnaround in that one.
Of 'Almost Persuaded', Mark Lanegan added:
Nobody else has ever sounded like the Louvin Brothers. Hearing them sing 'Almost Persuaded' always scares me a little bit - and that's a good thing.
