Best Coast: 'Our new record is emo' Best Coast Tickets
Bethany Cosentino is currently recording the follow up to 'Crazy For You' in LA
The duo are currently working on the follow up to 2010's 'Crazy For You' in Los Angeles, with producer Jon Brion (Kanye West, Fiona Apple). Talking to Pitchfork about one of her favourite tracks on the record, 'When I Cry', Cosentino said the song:
...has that thing I love - happy melody, sad lyrics. Seriously, this record is emo, get ready for it.
She added that the album will not be 'lo-fi', saying: We didn't want to make a 'lo-fi' record, we wanted to make something that was produced, and sounded different than our first record without completely changing who we are."
The band are recording in Capitol Studios in Hollywood, which Cosentino calls: "a legendary place". The songwriter and vocalist went on to say: "That's like the kind of place you dream about recording. The reverb chambers there are the reverb chambers that were used on everything from 'Pet Sounds' to Sinatra."
Cosentino explained that she and bandmate Bobb Bruno have called album track 'No One Like You' their Mazzy Star song because "it has that really moody, sleepy feel to it". She continued: "There are more slower songs on this record, which is exciting for me because I am much better at singing ballads. Most of the songs on this record are more about self-discovery and figuring out who I am... There are definitely still songs about love, but it's done in a different way now."
Best Coast recently parted ways with their drummer Ali Koehler, who has since stated that she was thrown out of the band rather than choosing to leave herself.
