Beyonce chose her appearance at last night's (August 28) MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) to announce she is pregnant with her first child.

During her performance of 'Love On Top', the singer told the crowd: "I want you to feel the love that's growing inside me", confirming the pregnancy rumours that have swirled in recent months.

At the close of the song, the former Destiny's Child star unbuttoned her jacket and rubbed her stomach, as her husband Jay-Z hugged his 'Watch The Throne' collaborator Kanye West in the audience.

Beyonce had spoken about wanting to get pregnant in an interview with CNN interviewer Piers Morgan earlier this year. She told the former Daily Mirror editor that 30 is the "ideal age" to start a family.

She had double reason to celebrate at last night's show - her track 'Run The World (Girls)' won Best Choreography. Meanwhile, Jay-Z and Kanye West performed their 'Watch The Throne' track 'Otis'.

As usual, Lady Gaga provided one of the biggest talking points of the evening, performing 'You And I' as her male alter ego Jo Calderone alongside Queen guitarist Brian May.

And there were also performances from the likes of Adele, Lil Wayne and Bruno Mars.

Meanwhile, Adele and Katy Perry were the big winners at the ceremony, walking away with four and three Moonmen gongs respectively.

See for the full list of winners.
