Beyonce has confirmed that she will appear as the main attraction at next year's Super Bowl halftime show.

The singer posted a picture of her face with the Super Bowl date, February 3, 2013, stuck to her cheeks on black tape, in true American football style, alongside the words 'Countdown to Touchdown' on her official website, Beyonce.com as well as on her Facebook page.

Beyonce will appear at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans during the prestigious American football game.

Madonna was this year's Super Bowl star, playing the event alongside guests Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj and LMFAO as well as a controversial turn from Brit rapper MIA, who raised her middle finger to one of the television cameras.

In the past, the halftime show has seen performances from The Rolling Stones, Prince, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.

It thought that Beyonce will bring on special guests during the high profile slot, including her husband Jay-Z and fellow members of her former girl group, Destiny's Child.

Beyonce has reportedly begun working on the follow-up to 2011's '4'. According to The Sun, the singer is currently holed up in a New York studio with Jay-Z's producer Hit-Boy and Kanye West recording tracks for her fifth studio album, the first since the birth of her daughter Blue Ivy earlier this year.
