Biffy Clyro showcased material from their forthcoming new double album during the second day of Download 2012 festival.

The band, who showed up onstage to a shower of red and orange fake fireworks and other visual effects on the big screens, drew upon their back-catalogue to play a hit-packed set - but also aired two new tracks from their forthcoming sixth album, which they plan to release as a double.

The band didn't hold back with the special effects, unleashing plumes of smoke across their mirror-bedecked stage, although the crowd was significantly smaller than for Tenacious D, who played before them on the same stage.

Frontman Simon Neil disappointed some fans by keeping his chest covered up in a white boiler suit with a collar, but his trademark howl was in full force. Barely speaking between tunes, he did break to introduce 'Toys Toys Toys' and new track 'Modern Magic Formula'. During the former, one punter unleashed about 20 toilet rolls into the air above the crowd as the sun broke through the crowds for the first time.

Neil also found time to big up tonight's headliners Metallica, declaring "Four words: birth, school, Metallica, death. We saw that band 20 years ago and it changed our lives."

The band then played 'Many Of Horror' - although recently-dropped X Factor loser Matt Cardle didn't show up - and continued with 'Bubbles' before showcasing another new track, 'Victory Over The Sun', and finishing with a triumphant rendition of 'Captain'.

Ben Emery from Bristol said they were "fucking awesome" and "life-changing", adding: "It's why I've got 'Mon The Biff' tattooed on my back."

Download 2012 continues with headline performances from Metallica and Black Sabbath.
