Manic Street Preachers' Nicky Wire has defended Biffy Clyro for lending their song 'Many of Horror' to The X Factor winner Matt Cardle.

Speaking to XFM, the bassist said that what mattered was the quality of the song, which Cardle has re-named 'When We Collide' for his version.

"You can’t stop a song from being a brilliant song," he said. "You can't stop a runaway train."

He also said the financial climate made it more acceptable for Biffy to allow their song to be covered, adding: "It's not easy for bands to make money these days."

According to official midweek figures Biffy's original 'Many Of Horror' is behind Cardle's 'When We Collide' in the race for the Christmas Number One.

The Scottish band have commented on Cardle's version, branding it "surreal" and "funny".

Manic Street Preachers recently made their own appearance on mainstream UK TV, performing on Strictly Come Dancing.
