Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil has claimed that it's time to give Scottish independence "a shot".

Speaking to NME for this week's cover feature, the singer claimed that "the time is now" for Scotland to become an independent country. "The way the world's going, we may as well give [Scottish Independence] a shot," he said. "The time is now. The fucking world is falling apart. Scotland has really good oil money, we've got renewable energy, we have ways of moving forward and we're in a strong position to make it happen."

Neil – who also joked that he and his bandmates could soon try "making a play for the Scottish National Anthem" – added: "I don't know what we're getting from London apart from a lack of control over our own future. It doesn't mean we don't love England or Wales."

Biffy could be on course for Number One with their sixth album 'Opposites' this week, if they can beat off the formidable power of the Les Miserables soundtrack, which has topped the chart for two weeks now.

For more from Biffy Clyro on the full struggle and story behind 'Opposites', pick up a copy of this week's NME digitally or on newsstands from today (January 30).
