Biffy Clyro jokingly said that they are "better than all English groups" after picking up the prize for Best British Band at last night's NME Awards.

The band, who opened the show with a performance of their song 'The Captain', spoke to NME backstage after they accepted their award, which they won ahead of fellow nominees Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, The Vaccines, The Maccabees and The Cribs. "We're not even English, we're better than all the other English bands," Simon Neil said. "To be fair we're not better than some other Scottish bands, it's a tough crowd up there!"

Paying tribute to their fellow nominees, Neil continued: "There's so many good guitar bands out there in the UK doing different types of shit and it shows what rude health we're in. The media spotlight will move away every now and then, but guitar music is essential and it will always be there."

He also found time to show some love for Outstanding Contribution To Music winners The Cribs, stating: "We've known those guys for 10 years and they're such a good fucking band. They're so honest and fucking real. it means a lot for us to win an award alongside those motherfuckers. It's emotional."
