Biffy Clyro played a set packed with hit singles and fan favourites as they headlined Leeds Festival for the first time.

In drizzling rain, the Scottish band opened with 'Different People', after which a topless Simon Neil said, "Let's fucking go!" 'That Golden Rule' followed, seeing balls of flame firing out of the top of an elaborately built stage with a huge recreation of the 'Opposites' sleeve providing a backdrop for the trio.

Neil then climbed onto a specially-built staircase to perform 'Who's Got A Match'. A camera inside his microphone transmitted onto the big screens as the singer lit a red flame and held it above his head. The band skirted disaster when, during the solo opening of 'Sounds Like Balloons', Simon Neil's microphone and guitar cut out leaving the Main Stage completely silent. When the sound returned, there was a huge cheer from the massive crowd.

Stepping out towards the crowd and into the pouring rain – and getting soaked in the process – Neil said to the audience: "The rain can suck a dick, music is more powerful than nature." Elsewhere in the set, Neil apologised for the fact Biffy Clyro haven't played Leeds Festival since 2010, promising: "Three years is too long, whether you like it or not, we're going to be back."

Elsewhere, the performance was interspersed with a number of special effects including bursts of smoke in 'Bubbles' and a huge array of fireworks for set closer 'Mountains'. Simon Neil smashed his guitar on the stage following the main set closer, 'The Captain', saying, "We've been waiting for this night for eight months. Leeds, you didn't disappoint us."
