Billy Bragg: 'Barack Obama is good for rock 'n' roll' Billy Bragg Tickets

Bragg hails Obama's election win on return from USA

Billy Bragg has hailed the recent US Presidential election winner Barack Obama, saying his appointment is "good for rock 'n' roll".

Bragg was speaking to NME Radio's In The Studio blog on his return from America, where he had been playing a series of gigs in the run-up to the November 4 election.

The singer/songwriter said he was inspired by the enthusiasm the American youths he encountered had for the Democrat candidate.

"I've never seen young people so charged up, so engaged," he said. "I thought it might be to do with the release of 'High School Musical 3', but actually it turned out to be more about Obama.

"When they elect a president they elect a president for all of us. [Obama's victory is] good for America, it's good for the world, and it's good for rock 'n' roll."

Billy Bragg is too overlooked by NME. Give him a front cover or something instead of just the odd news story on this site - he says things that need saying in an increasingly right wing and paranoid world.

Obama is good for everything! For now though... for now...

Another misguided and uninformed citizen, he wont change a thing and the sooner people realise that the better.

As a UK citizen, I'm hopeful Barack Obama will make a difference. It would be good to see Billy Bragg on the cover of the NME again, but then it took fifteen years for them to let The Cure back on...

Obviously hes not perfect, but to say he'll change nothing is pessimistic. I think in terms of foreign policy he may not, which is why it seems to people like us from UK that he'll be the same, but im sure in home policy he may improve a lot. Plus its just great for America to have a black president - i know its been said to death but its true. Consider the fact that 50 years ago black people couldn't even sit in the same place on a bus. Obamas presidency is a powerful, positive statement even if not much actually changes. And Billy Bragg is a legend by the way.

Tell us what you think. We’ll print the best responses in the NME letters page each week.
