Black Lips call Kiss' music 'misogynistic, sexist'; Gene Simmons says their name is 'racist'

Black Lips addressed Kiss' Gene Simmons during a live Q&A, calling for the "complete surrender of the Kiss army" over charges of misogyny.

The event occurred during a Huffington Post live interview with the Kiss singer, during which members of the public were asked to send in questions. Amid an array of queries from fans, one came from Cole Alexander, Jared Swilley and Jack Hines of the Atlanta garage punk band, who were daubed in face paint, in reference to Kiss' customary make-up, and were sitting in a graffiti-covered room.

Addressing the camera, Hines said: "Mr Simmons, we're here to tell you that the day of misogynistic, sexist rock'n'roll is over. We call for the complete and utter surrender of the Kiss army. Lay down your guitars. Do you accept our terms of surrender?"

In answer, Simmons replied, "Yes. I surrender entirely and I wanted to compliment your mum for the wonderful way she designed the decoration of the basement that she lets you live in. I think it's very attractive. I hope you get to leave your mum's basement soon."

Simmons then continued, "Remember - learn to speak English," after which the host pointed out that the band were speaking English before informing Simmons that his questioners were the "very successful rock band Black Lips". Simmons then responded, "They're not black – what are they, racist? Why are they calling themselves black?"

The comments come after Gene Simmons recently expressed his support for disgraced LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who was banned from the NBA for life for making racist comments. Simmons had stated, "I’m on... Don Sterling’s side and anybody who has a racist or an expletive rant privately… Everybody [says] jokes that are off-colour, or when they’re drunk."
