Bloc Party: 'Drug taking is synonymous with life'

Kele Okereke denies lyrics 'glamorise' drugs

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke has defended the controversial subject matter of certain lyrics found in second album ’A Weekend In The City’, admitting "I just don’t think it’s a big deal."

Speaking to Total:Specmagazine , the singer attributed their drug-related lyrics on the record to their own "honest" observations on life around them.

Okereke explained: "I think in the 21st Century drug-taking is something that is synonymous with life, really. All I intended to do with the songs is to capture what modern life feels like."

In turn, he dismissed claims that the lyrics might be construed as glamourising controversial subject matters.

Speaking specifically about any drug references on the album, he furthered, "They’re not in there to glamorise anything, it’s just aimed at being honest. I’m not making a judgement about drugs; they are
just there in the background."
