Couple get engaged at Bloc Party's LA show

Bloc Party's sold-out show at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles last night (July 29) turned into a love fest with a couple getting engaged on stage mid-set, and fans hugging bouncers by night's end.

The packed house went wild from the opening strains of 'Hunting For Witches' and cheered and sang along throughout the London band's 80-minute set.

"Today we stared death in the face and came out victorious," frontman Kele Okereke told the crowd when the band took the stage. Okereke sported a Barack Obama T-shirt and red baseball cap, while drummer Matt Tong went shirtless almost the entire evening.

The band, which included Daniel Lindegren (aka Tommy Sparks) standing in for bassist Gordon Moakes, played a healthy mix of material from their most recent album 'A Weekend In The City' as well as their 2005 debut 'Silent Alarm'.

Toward the end of the night, Okereke said that he'd like to invite his friend Patrick on stage. Patrick then proceeded to thank Bloc Party and propose to his girlfriend, who said yes and planted a big kiss on him.

"This one goes out to those two," Okereke said before the band launched into 'This Modern Love'.

Bloc Party returned for a four-song encore, which featured two drum kits on 'Sunday' and a short cover of Prince's 'I Would Die For You' that segued into their own 'She's Hearing Voices'.

Earlier in the evening, Does It Offend You Yeah?'s opening dance-rock set the festive mood for the evening. While the audience initially seemed reluctant to let go, perhaps because they'd been stuck in drink queues for more than an hour, they loosened up by the time the band played their dancefloor hit 'We Are Rockstars' and ended up creating a giant mosh pit.
