Bloc Party challenge Glastonbury fans to drown out Neil Young

Kele Okereke and co headline the Other Stage

Bloc Party challenged the Glastonbury crowd to drown out Pyramid Stage headliner Neil Young during their headlining slot on the Other Stage tonight (June 26).

Frontman Kele Okereke greeted the audience after playing opener 'One Month Off', asking them to throw down the gauntlet to Young, who was playing at the same time as the London band.

"There are so many of you!" he exclaimed. "I thought you'd all be watching Neil Young! I want you to have as much fun and make as much noise as possible so they can't hear anything on the Pyramid Stage."

The singer and guitarist was wearing a t-shirt made for homeless charity Shelter, adorned with the image of the late DJ John Peel, who a Glastonbury stage is named after.

The band played hits including 'Mercury', 'Banquet' and 'Hunting For Witches'.

Midway through the set Okereke bigged-up Lady GaGa, who played on the same stage as them earlier in the evening.

"How awesome was Lady GaGa?" he asked, drawing both cheers and boos. "Ooh, mixed opinions..." he added.

After playing 'Flux' and 'Helicopter', the band closed the first day of musical action on the Other Stage with a rapturously-received encore of 'This Modern Love'.

"To be honest with you," Okereke said at the climax of the set, "I've never really enjoyed going to or playing at Glastonbury before - until today!"

Bloc Party played:

'One Month Off'
'Hunting For Witches'
'Positive Tension'
'Halo'
'Signs'
'Waiting For The 7.18'
'Song For Clay (Disappear Here)'
'Banquet'
'Two More Years'
'One More Chance'
'Mercury'
'So Here We Are'
'The Prayer'
'Ares'
'Flux'
'Helicopter'
‘This Modern Love’

Why the fuck would anyone in their right mind watch Bloc Party over Neil? You'd have to be insane... and have a really shite music taste to do that!

Glasto really does bring out some of the most rediculous taste police comments you will see.Neil Young? A smidge past his sell by date you would suspect. I'll take my music taste and insanity and select Bloc Party over Mr Young's 20+ year old retreds any day of the week....and Kele was spot on about Lady GaGa - excellent.

did you see how many people turned up for bloc party? you accusing all of them of having ''shite music taste''? why not go write something nice on the post about neil diamond instead of something mean here. cheers

Why do people feel the need to comment on how good someone else's music taste is?Get over yourself. You just listen to the music you want to, and don't worry your little head about what everone else is listening to; you'll only be disappointed.I would go to see Bloc Party over Neil Young purely for the fact that, at a festival especially, I would rather dance to music. That being said, sitting here right now, I'd probably play Neil Young over Bloc Party.

whilst i do like BP and young I think they as musicians should have showed more respect to the classic songwriter. Bloc Party have started to become over played and over hyped. there a good band live without a doubt but not the best.

Neil Young (or Neil Diamond, what's the fucking difference they're all shite) may be rubbish, but Bloc Party are just about the worst band ever to have somehow lucked their way into a record deal. I mean really, they suck enormous hairy balls. They are so bad it defies words. Shit songs, utter shit. And that Kelly Ukelele bloke can't fucking sing. Anyone who likes them is a tone deaf bell end.

I challenge Bloc Party to stop making records immediately for the good of the human race.

nickracerx you ignorant tosser. Just the fact that you would choose Bloc Party and Lady GaGa shows how awful your taste in "music" is, and how pointless your opinion is.

Bloc Party and lady Duuh Duuh are tied for the title of 'most overrated, pointless, talentless tossers of the decade'.
