Conservatives beat Dave Rowntree to council seat
Blur’s Dave Rowntree has lost his election bid to become a local councillor.
The drummer stood for a seat on Westminster council as a Labour candidate in a by-elections in the Marylebone ward, but lost out to Conservative candidate Ian Rowley in yesterday's (May 3) vote.
Also running in the elections were Stuart Bonar for the Liberal Democrats and Colin Merton for the UK Independence Party.
As previously reported Rowntree announced his intention to stand for the by-elections as a “long-standing member of the Labour party and active in local politics for a while”.
The drummer said that he would be fighting for local issues, including old people’s homes and pedestrian crossings.
Early in the week he posted his take on the campaign on a YouTube video saying: “It’s been really good fun though, and I have really enjoyed it and I have learned a lot.”
