Blur close Glastonbury 2009 in epic fashion

The reformed band give the Pyramid Stage the perfect send-off - watch the video

Blur have closed 2009's Glastonbury festival in spectacular fashion tonight (June 28) with a career-spanning set.

Topping the bill on the Pyramid Stage on the final night of this year's event, frontman Damon Albarn greeted the crowd as they kicked the set off with their first single 'She's So High'.

"Wow, there's a lot of people here!" shouted the singer as he surveyed one of the weekend's biggest crowds, before the band powered into 'Girls And Boys'.

"I came here yesterday really early in the morning, it seems like there's a positive atmosphere," Albarn then declared ahead of 'There's No Other Way', before cryptically adding, "That's what I want to say about something else, let's keep it positive!"

With the set following a similar pattern to the band's recent intimate warm-up shows, the band seemed to have no problem with the radical increase in scale. A video of the performance can be watched below.

Blur were joined by extra musicians, including brass and backing singers, at various points throughout the set, with '13' tracks 'Trimm Trabb' and 'Tender' particularly benefiting from the enhanced arrangements.

"I'm enjoying this," declared Albarn midway through the set. "Thank you!"

The feeling was clearly mutual, with the crowd singing along to practically ever song, although Number One single 'Country House' drew especially loud applause from the crowd.

A trio of tracks from second album 'Modern Life Is Rubbish' followed, in the form of 'Oily Water', 'Chemical World' and 'Sunday Sunday', before the band welcomed a special guest to the stage.

Actor Phil Daniels emerged onstage offering Glastonbury "a bit of 'Parklife'".

'End Of A Century' and 'To The End' followed, before the band ended their main set with a stunning version of 'This Is A Low'.

The band briefly left the stage, before returning to kick off their encore with 'Popscene'.

"I'm pleased we decided to do these gigs now," quipped Albarn as Blur launched into a raucous version of the former single.

Keeping the pace up, 'Advert' and 'Song 2' saw the whole field go wild.

Again they left the stage, leaving the crowd to sing the refrain from 'Tender' in their absence, until the band returned, starting their second encore with 'For Tomorrow'

"This is the fourth time we've played here," said Albarn ahead of the song. "It's really, really fantastic!"

The band then rounded off action on the Pyramid Stage with an epic version of 'The Universal' that had the whole field singing along.

"Take care, goodnight," Albarn told the crowd as he and his bandmates left the stage for the final time.

I enjoyed what I saw, but am I alone in thinking that the band had other things on their mind tonight?...I've seen Blur about 20 times, and there was just something not right about this performance, Damon looked like he couldn't wait to get off & certainly didn't look as if he was enjoying it, also the latterday tracks were noticeably better performed I thought, they were much more relaxed doing them. Please don't think this is a slate, they're still head and shoulders over pretty much any UK band ever.

I found it quite depressing to see this 'hey lets relive the 90s' show' it was like watching a cabaret band reliving glastonbury moments of old. This is not Blur's fault, just the state of music today and its lack of epic new moments. I find it terrifying that kids today might have thought Pendulum were that moment...ugliest music I've ever heard.

paperstreet....i respect your opinion....but i think you are wrong. simple as that...they looked like they were immensely enjoying it....espescially damon....as zane lowe said, they were becoming friends again with the older hits like country house etc...i dont think its depressing drgonzo2012, nothing wrong with older bands performing....was springsteens set sad? Neil young? Though i really think kasabian should have been a headliner this year and they proved that with their performance and crowd size....also!! did anyone notice that nick cave and the bad seeds has a relatively small crowd...status quo had a bigger crowd and were playing 7 hours earlier!

Hey Paperstreet im glad you noticed it too...there was something a miss with them last night, I first thought it was cos i was watching BB4 choppy coverage but i pretty much freaked out in my front room during Neil Young and felt the atmosphere pour out of the screen, and i would say im a way bigger fan of Blur then Mr Young. so im kinda glad family commitments means i had to give up my Hyde Park ticket.

Paperstreet were you at glastonbury or watching the tele? They were having a great time especially damon, the crowd loved it and you could tell they were enjoying it so much, damon started crying at one point! obviously a miss interpretation on behalf of the television coverage if it was the tele which you were watching from!

I really haven't seen a sunday headliner that good in decades. I'm so glad glad Blur are back, this coming from a die hard Oasis fan. Epic.

Neil Young and Springsteen are in a different league, these are artists that never stopped making new albums so they played new songs at glastonbury. Blur were just a greatest hits extravaganza, milking their cash cow.

I went to the MEN Blur gig on Friday and they were mind blowingly good - far better than when I saw them as a 14 year old in 1995. They didn't appear as good on TV at Glasto but I think it was because of the disjointed way the TV coverage was done - constantly cutting out and then going back to them. I'm not sure why the band wanted them to do that, people going to Hyde Park know what to expect now as it's been widely reported so it's not really kept anything back as surprise.I'm delighted they're back better than ever, even if it is only for a quick "pay the tax bill" few months.

drgonzo - Members of Blur have never stopped making records (or doing all kinds of other stuff). Just not recently as Blur. And I'm sure Springsteen and Young have had the odd break in the past. Radiohead did a greatest hits performance at V and no-one complained, not every tour has to have new material. The important thing with a greatest hits tour is for a Band do do themselves justice and Blur certainly did that on sunday. As far as cash cows go, I notice Bruce also has a new greatest hits out this month. Coincidence?

Is a shouty version of "cuntry house" epic?? i thought they were gash and as for the comment of best british performance at a festival ever.. hahahaha you obviously ain't been to many festivals.. although it was a little better than the Stone roses performance at glasto all those years ago!!
