Nearly 2000 guitarists gathered in India today (October 26), in an attempt to break the world record for the largest guitar ensemble.

The musicians all played Bob Dylan's 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' on a remote hilltop in northeast India in an effort to break the existing Guinness world record held by guitarists in America's Kansas City.

Although Guinness Book of World Records' judges were not present at the Indian event, organisers claimed that their 1730 participants surpassed Kansas City's 1721 guitarists who performed Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water' in 2006.

"Though we set a new world record, we are sad as we were expecting more than 2000 guitarists," chief organiser Aiban Mawkhroh told Reuters.

The performance was videotaped and sent to Guinness authorities.
