Bombay Bicycle Club: 'We don't like our name'

Bombay Bicycle Club's Jack Steadman has revealed that the band don't like their name.

Steadman admitted that the London fourpiece have a history of choosing names they don't like, having been called The Canals before Bombay Bicycle Club.

"We hated that name," he told the Yorkshire Evening Post, before adding, "not that we like our name at the moment."

He said that despite their views on the name Bombay Bicycle Club, the band, who formed while they were at school, look set to be stuck with it.

"That's what happens when you start young – then it just sticks. We are just trapped. But the Arctic Monkeys are successful."

Bombay Bicycle Club took their name from a chain of Indian restaurants in London.

Steadman also spoke about his plans for Bombay Bicycle Club's new album, the follow-up to 'I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose'. He revealed he's worried about how it will turn out, adding he isn't currently sure what direction the album will even take.

"It's going to be hard to write the second album. There's only so many bands that go in different directions second time around, either for good or bad."

Before work starts on the new album, Steadman said the band plan to release an EP of folk cover songs – providing they can get the go-ahead from their label Island.

"We got to do it in David Gray's studio which was really nice," Steadman said of the EP. "We always wanted to do something completely different. We all love traditional British folk music. They're not just interpretations of our rock songs. We've just got to persuade Island to release it. We will just do it ourselves if they won't."
