Live Earth bound for Mumbai
Jon Bon Jovi among acts set to play in India
The event was staged over four continents over a 24-hour period in 2007, but this year will take place in India, in an effort to bring the issue of climate change to the developing world.
"India is not the country that created the climate crisis, but it is a developing nation and we need to open doors for local environmental organisations to create consciousness here," organiser Kevin Wall told The Associated Press.
Wall teamed up with 'An Inconvenient Truth' man and ex-US Vice President Al Gore to stage the event.
Gore has stated that India "will be among the leading powers of the global economy in the coming decades".
He says that the country "has a major role to play in leadership by example for the climate crisis and sustainable development".
Jon Bon Jovi is the first western musician to commit to playing the event, with many more local and international acts to be announced in the coming months.
